Musical Matter – Sonification

This is the latest in a series of unlikely musical composers: Dark Matter! Ever since the sonification of radioactive matter decay with the help of the Geiger counter, scientist-musicians seem to have looked at what to translate into sound. An example on this blog was the BlueMorph butterfly metamorphosis, but there are also musical volcanoes, musical cells, musical solar winds and anything from musical pollution to Hurricane Bob air pressure sounds. A scientist interviewed for a BBC article commented:

“It’s like a musician playing a piano. You would never imagine it was a volcano playing the music,” said Professor Barbera.

I wonder if it would be up for a jam!
